5) STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES
(i) Lack of an experienced Indian unit - In an Indian Premier League, a team having 17 Indian players, but just having 3 capped/experienced players in their side will definitely be a major issue for this side. On top of that, Shreyas Iyer is their only capped Indian batsman and they heavily rely on their overseas unit to deliver with the bat, or their inexperienced Indian retentions in Prabhsimran and Shashank.
(ii) A quality set of All Rounders - Although mostly overseas, their all rounders are all high quality and match winners on any given day. Even their Indian all rounders like Shedge, Musheer and Praveen are all highly talented players and can be players to watch out for in the upcoming seasons, and under the overseas talent in Stoinis-Maxwell-Omarzai-Jansen-Hardie, these all rounders should be groomed really well too.
(iii) Enough options in the Bowling Unit - In their ideal Playing XII above, they have 8 bowling options, despite having a good depth in their batting, and also have 8 other bowling options in their bench. In a squad of 25, having 16 bowling options gives the team enough possible combinations and bowling rotations according to the opposition and venue tactics.
(iv) Poor Historic Record - They have reached the finals of the IPL only once, back in 2014, and haven't even qualified for the knockout stage ever since in the last 11 years. They have not been a successful IPL franchise, and Shreyas Iyer shall be this franchise's 17th Captain, which is the most for any franchise across the globe.
(v) The Aussie power - We all are aware of how dominant Australian cricket has been across all formats throughout the years. With their coaching staff all being Aussies, and 5 of their 8 overseas players also being Aussies, one should be able to see their fighting spirit throughout the season, as well as their determination to win.
(vi) The Ponting-Shreyas duo - This duo was last seen in Delhi Capitals in the 2019 and 2020 seasons, wherein Shreyas led the team to the playoffs on both occasions, and even entered the franchise's one and only IPL final in the 2020 season. Shreyas is also the current defending champion with the KKR, and has been a successful IPL captain, having reached the playoffs thrice in his 4 seasons of being captain.
