5) STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES
A) STRENGTHS
(i) Team's History - Having reached the finals on both occasions of this team's history definitely increases the confidence levels amongst the players in this team. Despite the absence of their former skipper, they have enough experience in the side to keep the history of this team ongoing and look at a hattrick of final appearances in the IPL.
(ii) Individual Experience - Players like Gill, Saha, Shankar, Williamson, Miller, Rashid Mohit and Umesh bring in tremendous IPL experience individually and collectively they bring in one of the most experience in their ideal playing XI amongst all the teams this season. Their experience not only would help them calmly pushing through pressure situations but also help in absence of Hardik and Shami.
B) WEAKNESSES
(iii) Change/withdrawal in personnel - With their former skipper Hardik having been traded to the Mumbai Indians and a new captain in Gill taking over will surely create some issues initially until the team gets settled. Gill has never captained a side at such a platform, be it in U19, International or the IPL. Apart from this major change, the withdrawal of their last season's purple cap winner Mohammed Shami will be a huge loss to the side as well. Added to these two major changes, Rashid Khan's injury and unavailability in cricket since the World Cup in November only adds to the worries of Gill and the team, especially in the bowling department which was on top last season having 3 of their bowlers in the top 3 of the purple cap list, 2 of whom were Shami and Rashid.
6) NEW ADDITIONS TO THE SQUAD FROM IPL 2023
(i) Spencer Johnson - The most expensive buy at the auction for the Titans this season bought for 10Cr, this left arm seamer from Australia has had an amazing couple of previous seasons at the Big Bash League and debuted for Australia in September last year. He has played 26 T20s and has picked up 34 wickets to his name, at an economy rate of 7.64.
(ii) Shahrukh Khan - An established finisher for Tamil Nadu having paid a huge amount at the auction as well. He played every game in the league last season, but didn't get too many opportunities with the bat, although he did have good knocks down the order whenever he got the chance to bat. He played 14 games, and scored 156 runs at a hefty strike rate of 166. He has played 33 IPL games over the last three seasons and he definitely adds to the finishing abilities to the Titans' squad.
(iii) Umesh Yadav - Having played almost 150 IPL Matches, he debuted in the IPL way back in 2010 itself and has been a frontline seamer for every franchise that he's played for. He was also an integral part of the KKR bowling set-up known to have dismissed RCB to record the lowest total in IPL history. He is an experienced new ball powerplay bowler and in the absence of Shami and Hardik, he shall play an integral part in this season for the Titans.
(iv) Robin Minz - All over the news recently due to the accident that he suffered, but expected to be fit for the IPL. Bought for 3.6Cr at the auction, but has never played a single domestic match. He has only played 11 T20s in a Jharkhand based tournament in 2022, having scored 274 runs, at an average of 30.44, and a strike rate of 135.64.
(v) Sushant Mishra - This left arm seamer from Jharkhand has shown his potential in First Class and List A Matches with 27 and 15 wickets respectively in 10 games each. He has also picked up 7 wickets in just 4 T20s that he's played, showing his wicket taking abilities for his team. Even when you see his recent rerformances above, he has been wicketless only twice in 10 games, showing his consistency as well.
(vi) Azmatullah Omarzai - An absolute steal at the auction with the Titans grabbing him at 50 Lakhs itself. He has most certainly become one of the best all rounders around the world in the last one year. He had a batting average of 70.60 at the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup and also picked up 7 wickets with the ball. And ever since that World Cup, his form and consistency has only peaked.
(vii) Manav Suthar - Left arm orthodox bowlers are well and truly in fashion in every single team these days, and another one in this list is Suthar from Rajasthan. He is known to bowl at tight lengths and restrict the batsmen from scoring at a high rate, and his economy rate across the formats prove the same with that of 3 in First class, 4 in List A and 7 in T20s. With 65 wickets in 14 First Class games, and 15 in 8 List A Matches, he also chips in with wickets after putting the pressure on the batsmen.
(viii) Kartik Tyagi - He relies a lot on raw pace as we've seen from him in previous seasons having played for Rajasthan Royals and the Sunrisers Hyderabad. He has a high economy of 9.14 in 31 T20 matches, but has also chipped in with wickets having picked 25 in those 31 games. In the IPL however, his economy is worse being that at 10, but his strike rate is still below 24.
