5) STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES
A) STRENGTHS
(i) A quality overseas unit - With the English trio in Bairstow-Livingstone-Curran along with the newly added Woakes as well, and of course the wicket taking Rabada, they probably have the best set of overseas unit in their Playing XI. Not only they are explosive in their batting firepower but also partnership breakers with the ball. All of them are flexible players as well and can bat/bowl at any phase of the game and can contribute anywhere.
(ii) An attacking batting unit - Apart from Dhawan, all their batsmen in the XI are attacking players. They have an attacking top order in Bairstow, Curran and Prabhsimran, followed by an even more aggressive middle order with players like Livingstone, Raza and Jitesh. They are going with the Windies' approach of having all attacking batsmen in the side revolving around one defensive player. This is a proper T20 set-up with an attacking unit, so they'd hope for the batsmen to shine this season.
(iii) A quality bowling unit - Arshdeep-Rabada-Ellis-Harshal-Curran probably make the best death bowling and seam bowling unit amongst all the teams in this season. With the addition of Woakes, it just improves the quality of this already qualitative seam bowling unit, and adds a new ball bowler as well to a list of death bowling specialists. Chahar, Raza and Livingstone form a good wicket taking spin unit as well. Amongst all the teams, the bowling quality of this team probably looks as one of the best.
B) WEAKNESSES
(iv) Inexperienced Indian unit - They don't have a single experienced Indian player other than Shikhar. Although Rishi is an experienced domestic campaigner, and Arshdeep has played some International games in the last couple years, but if you look at proper experience in this format of the game, you can't pin a single player to stay calm and composed under pressure situations. Shikhar also lost his form towards the back-end of the tournament last season and he hasn't played much cricket between the last IPL season and this season. Being a young uncapped unit doesn't help them in having many quality backup players for replacements of players in case of bad form or injury.
6) NEW ADDITIONS TO THE SQUAD FROM IPL 2023
(i) Chris Woakes - This fast bowling all rounder from England comes in with tremendous experience from all around the world, but has only managed to play 21 IPL matches till date, and the last being in 2021, wherein he only played 3 games, although picked up 5 wickets, at a strike rate of 13 and an economy of 7.45. He has played 160 T20s, with a 181 wickets at a strike rate of 18, and 1015 runs, at an average of 22, and a strike rate of 130, proving himself to be a genuine all rounder, and an ideal backup to Curran or Rabada.
(ii) Harshal Patel - The purple cap winner of the 2021 season with 32 wickets in 15 games, at a strike rate of a mere 10.56, and that season's performance also earned him the tag of a death bowler specialist. He also had a good 2022 season with 19 wickets, at a strike rate of 17. But his expensive outing in the 2023 season got him unfortunately released from the Royal Challengers and the Punjab Kings took up that opportunity to improve their already qualitative death bowling. He has 111 wickets in 91 IPL matches, at a strike rate of only 17.
(iii) Rilee Rossouw - Although coming to the IPL on the back of a poor PSL 2024 season, he did have a good season with the Delhi Capitals in 2023, with 209 runs, at an average of 29.86, and a strike rate of 148.23 in the 9 matches that he played. He is an explosive top order batsman from South Africa and has played in almost every franchise tournament around the world, so brings enough T20 experience as well.
(iv) Vishwanath Pratap Singh - As seen above in his recent performances, he has only played 3 domestic games, all in the Ranji Trophy 2024, and has only scored 33 runs in 5 innings, at an average of 6.6, which definitely doesn't show his true potential. However, on a complete contrast, he played in the Punjab T20 League 2023, where he scored 430 runs in 11 innings, at an average of 43, and a strike rate of 140. He may not have been able to reciprocate that form in the Ranji Trophy, but has truly shown the potential to train well under someone like Brad Haddin.
(v) Prince Choudhary - Has only played one domestic game in the Ranji Trophy 2024 season, and unfortunately didn't get a single wicket to his name. He is a legbreak bowler from Delhi.
(vi) Ashutosh Sharma - He made is T20 debut for Madhya Pradesh in 2017-18 Zonal T20 League, and his List A debut in the 2019-20 Vijay Hazare Trophy. Though he wasn't able to do much in the List A format having scored only 56 runs in 7 games, his T20 stats paint a different picture altogether. He has scored 419 runs in 14 innings, at an average of 30, and a hefty strike rate if 198.
(vii) Shashank Singh - A batting all rounder from Chandigarh who comes on the back of 190 runs and 4 wickets in the 8 and 6 innings he played in the Ranji Trophy 2024 respectively. He had a breakout season in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2023 season scoring 296 runs in 5 innings, at an average of 59.20, and 10 wickets, at a strike rate of 20. He also played 6 games in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2023, wherein he scored 188 runs, at an average of 31.33 and a strike rate of 125, and also picked up 4 wickets at a strike rate of 13.
(viii) Tanay Thyagarajan - A left arm orthodox bowler from Hyderabad has picked up atleast 3 wickets in an inning 11 times in the last 17 innings, with a 5-fer in each other last 4 innings, and has not gone wicketless even once. He has been a consistent wicket taker in every format of the game. He comes on the back of being the leading wicket taker of the Ranji Trophy 2024 with 56 wickets in 14 games. He has been a highly economical bowler with that of 4.6 in 7 innings of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2023, and only 5.29 in 7 innings of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2023.
