5) STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES
A) STRENGTHS
(i) A quality batting unit - RCB has always been one team who has had a tremendous batting unit. Even in this season, when you see a Faf-Virat-Patidar-Maxwell combination at the top, you know that yet again this is a really good top order, and even if one of them plays till the end, their score would be above par. This time though, they've added Cameron Green to that explosiveness. And with Dinesh Karthik having done well as a finisher last season, they have a really strong batting unit. To improve their firepower, they could always play Jacks or Rawat, and that would just add more value to their batting depth in the order.
(ii) An attacking bowling unit - Siraj has grown to be an excellent wicket taking new ball bowler and will look to continue his wicket taking abilities in the powerplay this season as well. Lockie and Joseph are both known to pick consistent wickets in the death overs. Karn brings a lot of IPL experience and although is the only legbreak bowler in the team, his experience comes in handy in the middle overs. With Green, Maxwell and Akash in the mix of things, they have all phases of the game well sorted to put pressure on the opposition batsmen, and enough bowling options to rotate between. Their aggression in going for the wickets could come in handy in case of defending low totals.
B) WEAKNESSES
(iii) Heavy reliability on Overseas players - In a list of 18 Indian players in their current squad, they only have 2 players from the current Indian T20 set-up. Although Karthik and Karn bring a lot of experience, they are veterans in the game and may not always be reliable due to having been away from the game for a long time. Patidar missed out the entire IPL 2023 due to an injury and did not have a good Test Series against England either. All the remaining Indian players are uncapped or inexperienced and the team heavily relies on their overseas talent.
6) NEW ADDITIONS TO THE SQUAD FROM IPL 2023
(i) Alzarri Joseph - Initially played for Mumbai Indians and got a bowling figure of 6/12 which till date is the best bowling figure in the history of IPL. He has been the frontline seamer for the Windies as well, and has picked up 35 wickets in 22 T20Is, at a strike rate of 14.4. He played 7 games last season for the Gujarat Titans and picked up 7 wickets.
(ii) Yash Dayal - Everyone remembers his only unfortunate over against Rinku Singh, and he may have an expensive economy rate of 10 in the IPL, but he has played 14 IPL games and has picked up 13 wickets at a strike rate of 21. In T20s overall, he has played 42 games and picked up 38 wickets at a strike rate of 21. His economy rate is usually expensive due to the phases that he bowls in, but he can get wickets as well. In the absence of Topley, he is their only experienced Left Arm Seamer.
(iii) Lockie Ferguson - One of the fastest bowlers in cricket currently. He brings in raw pace and chips in with wickets at regular intervals anywhere that he plays. He is one of the frontline seamers for New Zealand and brings tremendous experience having played 136 T20s with a 159 wickets to his name. He has played 38 IPL matches and though has been comparatively expensive with an economy rate of 9, has also picked up 37 wickets at a strike rate of 22. He did well for the Kolkata Knight Riders earlier and would look to do better for the Challengers this season.
(iv) Swapnil Singh - He brings a lot of domestic cricket experience having been around the T20s since 2007. He has played 64 List A games and 76 T20 games. In T20s, he has scored 849 runs at an average of 22 and a strike rate of 123, and also has picked up 63 wickets at an economy rate of 7, and a strike rate of 21. He played for Punjab Kings earlier and although hasn't been able to make a mark in the IPL yet at all, he does bring experience of playing on Indian wickets undoubtedly.
(v) Saurav Chauhan - This aggressive batsman from Gujarat has played 19 T20s and scored 464 runs at a mere average of 29, but at a massive strike rate of 152. He also holds the record for the highest strike rate in an innings of a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match. He also holds the record for the fastest 50 in an Indian domestic T20 game having scored 61(18) and getting to a 50 in 14 deliveries.
(vi) Cameron Green - Transferred from the Mumbai Indians this season. Although he only picked up 6 wickets last season, he proved his worth in the IPL with the bat having scored 452 runs at an average of 50.22 and a strike rate of 160.28 with 2 40+, 2 60+, 1 century amongst his set of scores. He brings in really good all round abilities and has proven his worth with the bat as both an opener and a finisher, and in bowling as well whether with the new ball or the old ball. He surely brings a lot of quality to an already qualitative batting unit.
