5) STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES
A) STRENGTHS
(i) A quality and a well balanced unit - This is almost the same XI which ended up 2nd on the points table in 2022, and almost qualified last yeat too, ending 5th. The only absence is that of Holder who has been released, but they've taken an experienced campaigner in Powell into the squad from the auction, who is an ideal finisher for them. They could always promote Ashwin with the bat too. Jaiswal has been in a great form, and so has Buttler. Buttler was the orange cap winner in 2022, and Chahal was the purple cap winner in the same season. Jurel has shown real class in recent Test matches for India against England too. Addition of Avesh also helps at the death. Addition of Cadmore, Burger or Zampa would just add more value to the XI as ideal backups to players.
(ii) The spin twins/trio - They have a fixed Ash-Yuzi spin duo in their XI, who both bowl different types of variations. Ash bowls away from a left handed batsman with his off break deliveries, while Yuzi would bowl away from the right handed batsmen with his leg break ones. At the same time, on spin friendly wickets, they could make that duo as an ideal trio with Zampa joining the XI and adding more experience and value in an already quality side, and undoubtedly all 3 bring tremendous experience to their names.
B) WEAKNESSES
(iii) Lack of options at the bench - Amongst all the teams this season, this team comes with the least number of players in their squad with only 22. Apart from their ideal playing combination, they only have 6 other Indian players wherein 3 of them haven't even made their IPL debut yet, and the other 3 are all economically expensive seam options, which means that there are no proper Indian batting options or spin options in case of any injuries or lack of form. They are relying on their core 12 players part from the overseas options at the bench, and that is a huge risk and whether it works for them or not is something that only time can tell.
6) NEW ADDITIONS TO THE SQUAD FROM IPL 2023
(i) Nandre Burger - A quality left arm seamer from South Africa. He made his International debut just around 10 days before the auction, and his impressive bowling quality in the initial ODIs got him his debut stint in the IPL. He has played 56 T20s, picking up 64 wickets, at an economy rate of 7.4, and a strike rate of 17.7. He brings enough pace and variations to do well with both new ball and old ball in the most crucial phases of the game, and it makes him the ideal backup to Treng Boult.
(ii) Tom Kohler-Cadmore - Although coming on the back of a poor run in the PSL, he is an explosive top order batsman and has always done well in any and every tournament, having played 167 T20 matches around the world, majorly in the English T20 Blast. He has scored almost 4300 runs, at an average of 24, but a strike rate of 140. His recent form doesn't do justice to the calibre and quality he brings to the team, and is a perfect like to like backup to Jos Buttler or Shimron Hetmyer, if and when needed.
(iii) Rovman Powell - An established finisher for the Windies cricket team over the last year, he comes in with enough experience as a leader, and as a player, and with him joining Hetmyer, this duo could be really crucial towards the back end of an innings after a foundation set by the top 3. He has a strike rate of 140 in 206 T20s that he's played.
(iv) Shubham Dubey - This batsman from Vidarbha has played 20 T20s wherein he's scored 485 runs, at an average of 37, and a strike rate of 145. He had a great breakthrough Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2023 Season scoring 221 runs at an average of 73.7, and a hefty strike rate of 187, and even if you see his recent form lacking huge scores, he has always scored them at a good strike rate, which is the impact every team looks for in T20s.
(v) Abid Mushtaq - This bowling all rounder from J&K has always been a match winning asset domestically. He has scored 468 runs in 29 List A matches, at a strike rate of 113, although scored only 104 runs in 29 T20 games. However, he has picked up 25 wickets each in both format, at an economy rate of 6 in T20s, and a strike rate of 23. In the last 4 innings of his, he has picked up 5 wickets thrice, showing his consistency at the Ranji Trophy as well.
