5) STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES
A) STRENGTHS
(i) A high quality bowling attack - Bhuvi, Umran, Natarajan and Sundar make up arguably the best Indian bowling unit amongst all 10 teams in this season. Added this season to them are Hasaranga and Cummins, alongside previously present Farooqi and Jansen who all bring high quality to an already qualitative bowling unit. SRH has always been known for their bowling attack, and yet again this combo can be a deadly and a dangerous unit, especially on the various Indian wickets where all of them are experienced. All of them are capped players as well, and can take up the pressure to defend below par totals too.
(ii) A quality overseas unit - All their 8 overseas players are absolute match winners and have been crucial for their respective National teams over the last couple of years. Head has proved himself as an opener ever since the World Cup and guiding Australia to a win there in the Finals too. Markram is the former captain and one of the most reliable players in South Africa. Klaassen was the leading run scorer for this team last season and Phillips has become one of the most consistent lower order batter off late. Cummins, Hasaranga, Jansen and Farooqi as a unit bring a set of high quality and highly experienced bowlers as mentioned above. It's going to be tough to choose 4 from this set of high quality.
B) WEAKNESSES
(iii) A dicey batting unit - Their top order hasn't had the best of recent form in this format of the game. Although Tripathi has played at No.3 for India, he was dropped due to a poor run. Mayank is coming on the back of a poor run with the bat for Karnataka in every format of domestic tournaments. Abhishek is still a youngster and can give starts as seen previously, but atleast one of these top 3 need to play for a long time, which feels dicey. Markram's captaincy has been taken away, which means he is not a surety in the XI. They have a good set of quality overseas batters and whosoever plays amongst them have to ideally take the onus on themselves to post up a good total.
6) NEW ADDITIONS TO THE SQUAD FROM IPL 2023
(i) Pat Cummins - Bought in at 20Cr from the auction and has been named as the captain of the Sunrisers for this IPL season. In the last year, he has won the World Test Championship, the Ashes and the ODI World Cup. He comes in with tremendous experience both as a player and as a captain, and would like to turn things for this franchise around after a poor run by them last season. He has shown his prowess as a defensive as well as an aggressive batsman down the order, and everybody is already aware about the bowling expertise he possesses. He comes in as a genuine all rounder into this side to accompany Bhuvi in the powerplay, Hasaranga in the middle overs and Natarajan at the death.
(ii) Travis Head - Man of the match against India in both the World Test Championship Final and the 2023 ODI World Cup Final. Was also awarded the Man of the Match in the ODI World Cup Semi Final as well. He has proved that he's a big game player and can take on pressure and calmly manage any score on board under tough situations. An explosive top order batsman who can also chip in with wickets with the ball.
(iii) Wanindu Hasaranga - An absolute steal in the Auction being sold at base price itself. He is a true wicket taking bowler and is very consistent with his line and lengths. He was part of the Royal Challengers in the 2022 season and was the 2nd highest wicket taker of the tournament with 26 wickets in 16 matches, at a strike rate of just 13. He has also started showing his attacking nature with the bat as well, whether in the franchise tournaments around the world, or for Sri Lanka on the International stage.
(iv) Jhathavedh Subramanyan - An Indian origin Hong Kong Cricketer who made his first class debut for Durham in 2018, has captained the Hong Kong U19 Team in the U19 World Cup qualifiers in 2016. He made his List A debut for Hong Kong against Canada in 2018. And thereafter, he played in the Tamil Nadu Premier League 2023, where he picked up 11 wickets in 9 games, at a strike rate of 18.
(v) Jaydev Unadkat - The captain of the Saurashtra cricket team, he brings in tremendous experience to his name, both domestically and internationally. He has played for 7 different IPL franchises since his debut stint in 2010. He has played 180 T20s till date, with 218 wickets to his name, at a strike rate of 17.7. In the IPL, he has played 94 matches and his experience at the death overs could always come in crucial, especially as a backup to another death over specialist in Natarajan.
(vi) Akash Singh - This player from Rajasthan has been playing for Baroda over the last couple of seasons. He has been in the domestic set-up since 2019, and part of IPL since 2020. He initially started off with the Rajasthan Royals in 2020 and 2021 seasons and only got to play 1 game. He moved to Chennai Super Kings in 2023 and played 6 games, picking up 5 wickets, at a strike rate of 23. He was dropped due to an expensive economy rate of 10. He is this team's 5th Left Arm Seamer this season, so he may not get a game to play but if he does, he does bring in swing with the new ball.
(vii) Shahbaz Ahmed - Transferred from the Royal Challengers Bangalore, he comes in as the only frontline left arm orthodox bowler, and can also contribute with the bat down the order. His recent performances show absolute consistency with either bat or ball, and he has been contributing in every format of the game. He also brings in a lot of experience having played 81 T20s with 834 runs and 54 wickets to his name. He has a batting average of 23 and a bowling strike rate of 22.
