5) STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES
A) STRENGTHS
(i) A quality bowling unit - With Suyash in tremendous form during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, combined with Russell - Starc - Narine - Varun, they have one of the most wicket taking bowling units amongst all the teams, and a high quality unit added with the experience in every individual player. Adding to this experienced unit, Sakariya, Chameera, and Mujeeb also bring in quality bowling expertise.
(ii) A balanced batting unit - They have a well sought after batting unit with a Left-Right combination going on till No.9 with every player good at playing in any position according to the situation. If Manish Pandey and Shreyas Iyer can play as anchors, they have enough aggression at different phases of the game as well in the form of Gurbaz, Rana, Russell, Salt and Rinku in the team. It seems like a very balanced unit between defense and aggression, along with the Left-Right combo to put pressure on the opposition fielders.
B) WEAKNESSES
(iii) Reliability on overseas players - With Shreyas Iyer coming on the back of an injury, Venkatesh Iyer not being in the best of touches off late, Manish Pandey being a veteran but off form in the last couple of seasons, and an inexperienced bench with respect to their individual IPL stints, it seems that once again KKR is relying on their overseas talent backed by Russell - Narine and their new most expensive addition in Starc.
6) NEW ADDITIONS TO THE SQUAD FROM IPL 2023
(i) Mitchell Starc - The most expensive player in IPL history having been bought for 24.75Cr, he is undoubtedly one of the best left arm seamers in the world currently. A huge asset in every format of the game for the Aussies, and although coming to the IPL after a long time, he will always be a force to reckon and a name familiar to everyone to create havoc with the new ball as well as in the death overs.
(ii) Mujeeb Ur Rahman - This Afghan off spinner became the youngest player in 2018 to play in the IPL where he played 11 matches for the Punjab Kings, picking up 14 wickets, at an economy rate of only 7 and a strike rate of 18. However, he played only 5 matches in 2019 and was dropped due to poor performances. That continued in 2020 wherein he only got 2 outings and he couldn't manage a single wicket and was dropped thereafter. In 2021, he went to the Sunrisers Hyderabad and played only 1 game, had a figure of 2/29 in 4 overs and was unfortunately again dropped. After a 2 year break from the IPL, he has been taken by the Knight Riders for the 2024 season, and although his recent form may not do justice to his quality and calibre with the ball, adding him to a quality spin unit not only gives them an added boost in their spin unit, but also works as a like to like backup for Narine.
(iii) Sherfane Rutherford - If added to the Playing XI, alongside Rinku and Russell, he could be another asset as an explosive finisher to this side. His recent form has all touched high strike rates and he has been playing consistently for his franchise teams around the world as well as for the Windies. In the 3rd T20I against Australia recently, he took the Windies total from 79/5 in 9 overs to 220/6 with a score of 67(40)* alongside Russell's 71(29). And with this duo here together again, they could fancy their chances at high totals.
(iv) Dushmantha Chameera - Although coming as a replacement player to Gus Atkinson, he is also battling with some injuries off late. He surely brings a lot of International experience as well as enough variations at the death overs phase to restrict teams from scoring too many runs towards the end. He has been an asset to the Sri Lankan cricket team in the past few years. Despite bowling at the most crucial overs, has an economy rate of less than 9 in the 12 IPL games that he's played, and has picked up 9 wickets to his name as well. Not only that, his down the order batting flourish at the IPL is also at a strike rate of 154 in the 43 runs that he's scored.
(v) Chetan Sakariya - Having played 19 IPL matches till date, mainly for the Delhi Capitals, he's picked up 20 wickets at a strike rate of 21, and a best bowling figure of 3/31. He has proven to be a good new ball bowler in the powerplay overs and as the team's only Indian left arm seamer, he could grow a lot under somebody like Mitchell Starc and he could also prove to be a match winner if he gets to play.
(vi) Manish Pandey - A veteran in the IPL coming back to the team where he rose to fame and played the maximum number of matches for. He was part of the Knight Riders from 2014-17 having played 55 matches scoring 1270 runs at an average of 30. Although, in the previous couple of seasons, he hasn't averaged even 20, his experience in the IPL with a 170 matches to his name combined with his history with this franchise and his current form for Karnataka, he could well and truly be a differential pick.
(vii) KS Bharat - The only Indian wicket keeper in this team, he recently lost his place to Dhruv Jurel in the Indian test side. He may not have gotten many matches last season with the Capitals, but was surely a good young prospect for the Royal Challengers a couple of seasons back. He has played only 10 IPL games, but his finish against Avesh Khan in the last over is still a memorable moment. He has scored 200 runs with a highest score of 78, an average of 29, and a strike rate of 122, which may not seem huge, but is good enough for a top order batsman who is given the role of an anchor.
(viii) Angkrish Raghuvanshi - He is a latest find after his stint for Mumbai at the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2023 season as an opener. An 18 year old youngster, he had a decent season scoring 138 runs at a strike rate of 116, and an average of 23, but utilising the powerplay fielding restrictions well in the absence of Shaw.
(ix) Sakib Hussain - This 19 year old Fast bowler from Bihar has only played 2 T20s domestically and although has conceded at an economy rate of 12, he has picked up 4 wickets at a strike rate of 6, which shows that he is an attacking bowler and though will be hit for runs, he would end up with wickets too.
(x) Ramandeep Singh - He had the 3rd highest batting strike rate at the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2023 having scored 127 runs at a strike rate of 223. He is a quality batting all rounder from Punjab, and played earlier for the Mumbai Indians, wherein he played 5 IPL games and was batting way down the order, and scored 45 runs at an average of 22.50. However, he picked up 6 wickets in those 5 games, at a strike rate of only 6.
