5) STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES
A) STRENGTHS
(i) A balanced unit - If you look at their batting order in the above given probable XI, they have a left-right combination all the way till No.11, with 5 of one and 6 of the other. And every batsman can play at any given position, depending on their role given by the management, and the on-field situation. In their bowling unit, they have enough variety with the ball, having an Offbreak bowler, a Legbreak bowler, a left arm orthdox, a couple of left arm seamers, as well as a couple of right arm seamers. They have enough bowling options for Rahul to keep rotating depending on the opposition matchups.
(ii) An attacking unit - In a T20 game, a side needs enough attacking batsmen so that they can be confident of scoring above par totals, as well as chase down high totals on days where the bowlers end up having a bad outing. Rahul is the only moderately defensive batsman in their Top 8 in the above probable XI, and even Rahul, when it comes to the IPL, can get attacking, and always gets his form back. A combination of QDK, Pooran, Mayers, Padikkal, Stoinis, Hooda and Krunal add on to a huge list of explosiveness and also a good depth in the batting with somebody like a Willey or a Mavi at 9 could help relieve pressure off of Rahul at the top.
6) NEW ADDITIONS TO THE SQUAD FROM IPL 2023
(i) Shivam Mavi - An experienced domestic campaigner having played for Uttar Pradesh since 2018 till date, and for the Kolkata Knight Riders from 2018 - 2022. He has played 52 T20s and has picked up 53 wickets, with 30 of them in the 31 IPL matches, at a strike rate of 21.6. He has also played 6 T20Is in 2023 wherein he got 7 wickets to his name.
(ii) Arshin Kulkarni - A top order batting all rounder from the U19 Indian World Cup Squad. His consistency prior to the world cup got him in limelight during the auction and was the only player from this entire U19 team to have been picked at the auction. He has only played 6 T20s but has scored 121 runs at a hefty strike rate of 164, and also has 4 wickets to his name, and this all round ability makes him a great young prospect.
(iii) David Willey - An Internationally experienced campaigner having played in almost every franchise tournament around the world. With 267 T20 matches and a 156 List A matches to his name, he brings a lot of experience into this team. Although he has only played 11 IPL matches till date, he has been in good form in the various franchise leagues over the past few months and can be an asset with his all round abilities.
(iv) Manimaran Siddharth - One of the left arm orthodox trio from Tamil Nadu, he is a consistent wicket taking and an economical bowler. Although has been unfortunate in not being able to debut in the IPL yet, despite being part of the Kolkata Knight Riders earlier, he is a true asset with 18 wickets the 7 T20s he's played, at an economy rate of less than 5, and a strike rate of a mere 8.3.
(v) Ashton Turner - A day after the auction, he suffered an injury in the Big Bash League being ruled out from cricket since then due to a surgery. Still unknown whether he will feature in the IPL this season or not, he does bring a lot of experience, both as a player, and as a leader. Although he has only managed to score 3 runs in 4 games in the IPL, his experience can always come in handy with both bat and ball, and is a good backup player to Stoinis as a middle order batting all rounder.
(vi) Shamar Joseph - Battling with an injury, he came and broke the back of the Aussie team with 7 wickets in the 2nd Innings of a crucial match winning bowling spell in the 2nd Test of the Series, making it the first win for Windies in Australia after 27 years. This fiery spell immediately got him into reckoning around the world and was immediately named as a replacement to Mark Wood for the Super Giants.
(vii) Mohd Arshad Khan - Played for the Mumbai Indians in the previous couple of seasons and was dropped due to an expensive economy rate of 13.4 in the 6 matches that he's played. He took 5 wickets at a strike rate of 17, which shows that he is a wicket taking left arm seamer, but needs to keep tighter lengths for a better economy rate. Under the guidance of Morne Morkel, he could really be groomed well, especially with the new ball ability that he already possesses to an extent.
(viii) Devdutt Padikkal - Transferred from the Rajasthan Royals, he has been in absolute gem of a form recently in every format of the domestic games, and thereafter got an International debut in the final Test vs England wherein he also got a half century to his name. In the last 10 games and 13 innings, he has scored 5 Centuries, 3 Half Centuries and not a single inning below 20. He brings a lot of stability, class and a good form to this team, and playing alongside his domestic teammate KL Rahul, he could do really well.
