5) STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES
A) STRENGTHS
(i) All bowling variations available - If you notice the above probable XI, you can see that the team has one offbreak bowler, one left arm chinaman, one left arm orthodox, one left arm seamer and a couple of right arm seamers. They have atleast one player for every possible bowling variation in the side which would surely help them in rotating bowlers according to the matchups against the opposition batsmen.
(ii) A Left-Right Combination - They have 3 LHBs and 4 RHBs in their ideal batting order according to the probable XI given above. All these batsmen in the middle order can also play at any position according to the situation and however the team wants to use them. This continuous combination gives the team the flexibility to put pressure on the fielders as well.
B) WEAKNESSES
(iii) Their win percentages - They don't have a good record against any opposition or on their home venue. They have a win percentage below 50% against every team and even on their registered home venue for this season. Their historic record has not been good either, having reached the finals only once in their lifetime in 2020.
(iv) Rishabh Pant's comeback - Rishabh Pant played his last competitive game back in 2022, and after a year and a half of being away from this sport due to his injuries post the accident, him coming back to the IPL straightaway as the captain of the team could go either way. It could be a strength or a weakness for the team but a team with a poor historic record and a captain who's been away from the sport for almost 2 years could be risky. He proved his worth as a captain and as a finisher, but only time will tell if he still has those abilities and can make the most of whatever training he's had.
6) NEW ADDITIONS TO THE SQUAD FROM IPL 2023
(i) Jhye Richardson - This fast bowler from Australia played for the Punjab Kings in 2021 after a breakout season in the Big Bash League and in the Australian side the year before. He only played 3 IPL matches and was dropped from the side due to his high economy rate of almost 11. He picked up 3 wickets in those 3 games and although hasn't made a mark in the IPL, he's been one of the highest wicket takers in the BBL over the last few years.
(ii) Harry Brook - He became the first centurion of IPL 2023 by scoring 100 against KKR after a string of low scores prior to that. After a couple more low scores, he was demoted to No.5 and was playing as a finisher for the Sunrisers. He played a total of 11 games last season, scoring 190 runs at an average of 21 and a strike rate of 123. He has been a solid middle order batsman for England and his other domestic teams.
(iii) Tristan Stubbs - Coming on the back of a triple century in a domestic game, he has truly earned the tag of a finisher at the SA20 League 2024 scoring 301 runs at an average of 60 and a strike rate of 168 in 9 innings. He hasn't made a mark in the IPL yet, having scored only 27 runs in 4 games, but his current form definitely boosts his confidence.
(iv) Shai Hope - The only experienced wicket keeper in this side until Pant starts keeping again. He has been an excellent ODI player but over the last year he has also made way into the West Indian T20I setup as well. He has shown aggression playing in the middle order and although hasn't scored too many runs, he's trying to maintain a hefty strike rate nonetheless. And that has gotten him is debut IPL stint now. He averages 50 in ODIs, but only 21 in T20s, however his strike rate is now at 125 in T20s and he's trying to improve on that constantly.
(v) Ricky Bhui - Been an integral part of the Andhra cricket team in every format since 2013, having played 71 first class matches, 70 List A matches and 62 T20s as well. Brings a lot of domestic experience to his name. He averages 32.5 and has a strike rate of 138 in T20s, however he is yet to make a mark in the IPL, having scored only 7 runs in the 2 outings he's gotten way back in 2018-19.
(vi) Swastik Chhikara - He has played 6 Vijay Hazare Trophy Matches for Uttar Pradesh having scored 200 runs at an average of 33.3. He hasn't played a single domestic T20 game, but his breakthrough season in the UP T20 League is what got him into the limelight during the auction. He scored 494 runs in just 9 games, at an average of 70.57, which included 3 centuries and 2 fifties, at a strike rate of 173.33. He could be a very good impact player down the order under the training and guidance of senior players in the team.
(vii) Rasikh Dar - He was bought by Mumbai Indians in 2019 and played only 1 game that season and was dropped. He brings in raw pace, just like any other seamer from J&K. He was banned for two years, and then was bought up again in the Auction by the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2022, and again played only 2 games, and although was impressive with the new ball, and was economical in both the games, unfortunately couldn't register a single wicket in the IPL, and thereafter was dropped. He is a good new ball bowler and is a good backup to senior players like Ishant or Khaleel.
(viii) Kumar Kushagra - A wicket keeper batsman from Jharkhand who has had a great time in the List A format, having scored 700 runs in 23 games, at an average of 47. He hasn't had a good time in the T20 format yet, but he comes in as an Indian wicket keeping option in case of freeing up an overseas spot of Hope. His recent performances also show consistency with contributions to his team.
(ix) Sumit Kumar - Has been one of the most crucial all rounders for Haryana in every format of the game. He has scored 570 runs in 44 T20s, at an average of 28.5, and a strike rate of 134, and also has picked up 42 wickets, at an economy of 7.4, and a strike rate of 14.
