5) STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES
A) STRENGTHS
(i) International Experience - Their ideal XI would have every single player who has been capped and has been playing for their respective National teams for atleast the past 1 year, and this team collectively has a lot of experience amongst their individual players. Even their new additions in players like Mohammad Nabi and Dilshan Madushanka have enough experience behind them which will be an asset in not only grooming and guiding the youngsters in the team, but also calmly handling the pressure situations.
(ii) 5-Time Champions - One of the most successful franchises in the history of IPL, and with Hardik Pandya back into his former side, this team has majority of players from earlier winning years as a part of their squad this year and most of them have played enough cricket with each other in the IPL to be able to click well as a team.
(iii) Quality of the bench - Even players at the bench bring a lot of quality. We saw Madhwal with consistent wickets at the death last season, Arjun bowling well with the new ball in the powerplay, Mulani being a true all round asset to the Mumbai domestic team, Gopal bringing a lot of experience domestically, Wadhera showing his power hitting prowess last season, and ofcourse the overseas players are all backed with enough International experience to their names.
B) WEAKNESSES
(iv) Absence of an spin quality - They don't have a frontline offbreak bowler or a left arm wrist spinner apart from Kartikeya to be able to take the ball away from the left handed batsmen. In case they face oppositions with more lefties in their batting unit, this team shall need to play Mohammad Nabi as their only experienced frontline offbreak bowler, unless they rely on part timers like David or Tilak. Mulani, Gopal and Piyush are the only frontline spin options in their 25-player squad. As the tournament goes on, the pitches get slower, and the absence of enough spinners in this side means that they would have to rotate amongst these minimal options only.
(v) New Captain - Although Hardik was a part of this franchise until 3 seasons ago, Rohit has been the captain for this team for around 10 years, and the controversies surrounding the announcement of a new captain in Hardik all of a sudden have been in the talks for a while now, but how would Rohit and Hardik adapt to these new circumstances along with the rest of the team while playing on field is yet to be seen. Hardik has been a successful captain for the Titans having reached the finals in both the previous seasons, but his injury woes still remain a concern for the entire duration of this season.
6) NEW ADDITIONS TO THE SQUAD FROM IPL 2023
(i) Hardik Pandya - He needs no introduction. He was the captain for Gujarat Titans over the last two seasons and reached the finals on both occasions, having won in his debut season as captain. He has played for Mumbai Indians from 2015-2021 and now is back and that too as captain of the side.
(ii) Gerald Coetzee - A recent addition to the South African cricket team, and a debut season in the IPL. He was the third highest wicket taker in the CSA T20 League Championship 2022-23 with 13 wickets in 6 games, and also had the highest batting strike rate in the season with 207.31, the only one above 200. He bowls at a really good pace and also chips in with the bat down the order, and could be a really good addition to this side.
(iii) Nuwan Thushara - With Malinga as this team's bowling coach, it's not surprising that there were two Sri Lankan seamers selected by this team in the auction. Thushara has a similar slinging action like Malinga and rattles the oppositions with the angle and the pace that he bowls at. He has picked up 69 wickets in 54 T20s and this will be the first ever franchise league tournament apart from the Lanka Premier League in which he would feature.
(iv) Dilshan Madushanka - Mumbai Indians have always loved having left arm overseas seamers and joining Behrendorff in this side is Madushanka. The second Sri Lankan in this team and a wicket taking bowler in the International circuit. He has played a lot of T20 cricket in 2023, having played in the SA20 League as well as the ILT20 League, bringing him some experience ahead of his debut season at the IPL.
(v) Mohammad Nabi - The only frontline offbreak bowler that the Mumbai Indians have this season. He has tremendous International experience having played for Afghanistan since 2009. He has played in almost every single franchise league around the world having 178 T20s under his name over the years. He is a quality all rounder and has been in good form with both bat and ball recently.
(vi) Naman Dhir - A hard hitting all rounder from Punjab hasn't yet made a mark in the T20 format of the game having played only 5 matches scoring only 39 runs, but has a strike rate of 139. However, in the first class format, he has played 14 matches having scored 574 runs with 8 wickets to his name. He is considered as a finisher and has done that a couple of times for Punjab in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy as well, and would love to learn and grow under the likes of Hardik as captain and Pollard as mentor.
(vii) Anshul Kamboj - This fast bowler from Haryana had a great 2023 Vijay Hazare Trophy Season having picked up 17 wickets in 10 games, at a mere economy rate of 3.58. He has played only 9 T20 games till date but has proved his worth with 11 wickets at a strike rate of 13, and an economy rate of less than 7.
(viii) Shivalik Sharma - The Baroda man’s career graph kickstarted with crucial knocks in the 2016 Vinoo Mankad Under-19 Trophy and the 2017 Cooch Behar Under-19 Trophy. Although didn't get the reckoning into the IPL then, his 2023 season of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with 114 runs in 10 games at a strike rate of 134 got him in radar at the auction. He can also pitch in with the ball at times as a part time leg break bowler.
(ix) Shreyas Gopal - He started his IPL career with the Mumbai Indians in 2014, and now after playing for two other franchises, is back with his original franchise. He is best known for the hattrick he picked against RCB's trio of Virat, ABD and Stoinis in 2019. He has played almost 50 IPL Matches and brings enough experience to his name, and although hasn't had the best of the seasons previously, he would be looking for something different this time after a good domestic season.
