5) STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES
A) STRENGTHS
(i) An experienced batting unit - When you see this lineup, you see a lot of experienced players in Conway, Rachin, Mitchell, Moeen, Jadeja and MSD. Gaikwad has also been a huge asset at the top of the order for them in the previous seasons, and ofcourse brings experience as a capped player now. Even playing Rahane and Dube in the XI, like the previous season, also gives a lot of experience in this format of the game, and their new found aggression as seen in the last season would always be an asset to the team in the middle order. They have a well balanced and a well sorted batting unit, especially one that can calmly push through pressure situations, and no wonder they are currently the defending champions.
(ii) A balanced combination - They have all possible combinations available in their Playing XI itself. An offbreak bowler, a couple of left arm orthodox bowlers, and a set of experienced right arm seamers, and in case Mustafizur/Mukesh play, then a left arm seam option as well, so MSD could easily rotate bowlers depending on the matchups against the opposition batsmen, which could be a crucial thing for him. They also have enough left handed and right handed batsmen in their batting order to continue their Left-Right combination and send any batsman depending on the situation to continue the momentum and to put pressure on the fielding side.
(iii) 5-Time Champions - Not only are they the defending champions having one with almost a similar squad last year, they have won the IPL trophy 5 times, and have reached the playoffs 7 other times, a total of 12 times in 14 seasons that they've played in. They are the most experienced and most sought after unit, under the most experienced former Indian captain. They know how to handle tough situations and not take losses as a demotivating factor.
B) WEAKNESSES
(iv) An inexperienced bench of Indians - In case of any injuries to their ideal combination of playing XI, they would have to resort to inexperienced uncapped Indian players, and none of them can match the experience every player in the Playing XI individually brings to the team. They can all be match winners in their own way, but they still need to prove themselves in the IPL, provided they get the opportunity to play.
6) NEW ADDITIONS TO THE SQUAD FROM IPL 2023
(i) Daryl Mitchell - Played for the Rajasthan Royals earlier and unfortunately wasn't able to make a mark in the IPL yet, but having scored two centuries in the 2023 World Cup and both against India, got him back into the radar at the Auction. He scored a total of 552 runs at an average of 69 in 9 games, and also showed that he could bowl at crucial stages and be a partnership breaker. He has been one of the most sought after and reliable batter for New Zealand over the last couple of years and shall be looking forward to making a mark at the IPL as well.
(ii) Rachin Ravindra - Debut season for him in the IPL after an exceptional season at the 2023 World Cup held in India. He scored 578 runs with 3 fifties and 3 centuries in 10 games at an average of 64.22, and picked up 5 wickets as well. He also scored 68(35) in the recent 1st T20I against Australia as well. He has been a key all rounder for Welllington in everg format too. His exceptional all round abilities, and his performance on Indian wickets made him a key pick at the Auction and in the absence of Conway, he could be a well sorted top order batsman alongside Gaikwad and Rahane.
(iii) Shardul Thakur - It's a homecoming for him after a break of 3 years. He played in CSK from 2018-21, wherein he played a total of 48 Matches and picked up 55 wickets for CSK. He is coming on the back of a century in his Ranji Trophy Semis batting at No.9, and has also been chipping with wickets at regular intervals in every format of the game that he's been playing recently. He came into the Indian side thanks to his stint at CSK and he'd be glad to be back under MSD in Yellow.
(iv) Mustafizur Rahman - The only overseas player to have ever won the Emerging Player Award back in 2016 for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Has played for 3 franchises earlier and now the one of the only two left arm seam options in this team. He's been an experienced player for Bangladesh and has enough variations to be a quality wicket taking death bowler.
(v) Sameer Rizvi - An aggressive batsman from Uttar Pradesh has played 11 T20 games domestically and has scored 295 runs at an average of 49.2 and a strike rate of 135. He also scored 312(266) in the Col CK Nayudu Trophy against Saurashtra a week back. His 49 ball 104 in the UP T20 League is what set him apart as a finisher and in the reckoning at the Auction.
(vi) Avanish Rao Aravelly - The wicket keeper batsman from the recent U19 Indian World Cup squad. He was given the role of a lower order finisher in that squad, and although only scored 84 runs in 7 innings, he had the 7th highest strike rate in the edition, even though it was a mere 110.53.
