5) STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES
A) STRENGTHS
(i) A quality Indian bowling attack - Bhuvi, Umran, Natarajan and Sundar make up arguably the best Indian bowling unit amongst all 10 teams in this season. SRH has always been known for their bowling attack, and yet again this combo can be a deadly and a dangerous unit, especially on the various Indian wickets they're used to playing on. All of them are capped players as well, and can take up the pressure to defend below par totals too.
(ii) An In-form overseas unit - Markram is coming on the back of winning the SA20 league and won the player of the series award as well. Phillips has been an excellent hitter of the ball and has been doing well for the Kiwis as well as for his domestic side. Farooqi, Adil Rashid and Akeal have been amongst the wickets in various T20 leagues and tours across the globe. Harry Brook is a great young prospect having done extremely well in every format of the game, whether the T20s, ODs, or First Class cricket. Klaassen and Marco have also been good quality players for the Proteas as well in the SA20 league recently concluded too. They have a great young and in-form overseas unit.
B) WEAKNESSES
(iii) A dicey batting unit - Their top order hasn't had the best of recent form in this format of the game. Although Tripathi plays at No.3 for India, he is yet to make a mark with some consistent performances. Mayank is coming on the back of being the leading run scorer in the Ranji Trophy season 2022-23, but hasn't done well in the T20 format for a long time now. Abhishek is still a youngster and can give starts, but atleast one of these top 3 need to play for a long time, which feels dicey. Brook is a new player in the IPL, and hasn't played much on Indian wickets too, so would be interesting to see what he does this season. Markram has to act as the pillar of this batting unit and hope that atleast one of the others step up in every game and give a good score for their bowlers to defend.
6) NEW ADDITIONS TO THE SQUAD FROM IPL 2022
(i) Harry Brook - The most expensive batsman sold in this year's IPL Auction, and now it's time for him to prove his worth with the bat too. He has been a consistent performer in every format, whether T20s, List A or First Class cricket. He has been a great find for England in their International setup too. He has played almost 100 T20 matches till date, across various leagues, and has scored 2432 runs, at an average of 34 and a strike rate of 148. He can be a very good find this season and can be the star for the Sunrisers as a long term prospect too.
(ii) Mayank Agarwal - An IPL veteran, having played in the IPL every season since his debut in 2011. He has played more than 100 IPL matches, and has played at almost every position in the top 7 over the years. He has played for 4 IPL franchises already, and is now with another new one for him. He was the captain for the Punjab Kings in the last season, but had a poor outing with the bat. He managed to only score 196 runs in 13 games, at an average of 16.33, and a strike rate of 122.50. He even demoted himself down the order but couldn't manage to do much even then. He is coming off being the leading run scorer in the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy season, though had a poor outing in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
(iii) Vivrant Sharma - This batsman from Jammu and Kashmir has been a good find at the domestic level. He made his T20 debut only in the 2021 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and has only played 9 T20 games as of date. In the 4 games of the 2022 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Season, he's managed to score 2 50s as well. He had a T20 average of 24 and a strike rate of 128.
(iv) Samarth Vyas - This attacking batsman from Saurashtra has been in a tremendous form in recent times. He was the 5th highest run scorer in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022-23 Season, having scored 314 runs in 7 games, at an average of 52.33 and a hefty strike rate of 177. He has been a valuable batsman for the domestic side in all the formats and has been a huge asset for them.
(v) Sanvir Singh - This fast bowling all rounder from Punjab is known to be a big hitter of the ball down the order, and also bowls at a decent pace, especially with the new ball. He has played 15 games in the T20 format, and has only scored 151 runs, but at an aggressive strike rate of 187, and an average of 50.33. Though he's a bowling all rounder, with the ball, he's managed to pick up only 3 wickets, at a strike rate of 20.
(vi) Upendra Yadav - This wicket keeper batsman from Uttar Pradesh, now plays for Railways in the domestic circuit, had also been kept as a standby wicket keeper as a backup to Bharat and Kishan in the Border Gavaskar Trophy in case of injuries. That already proves that he's caught the eyes of the selectors and the scouts, and even though he's done better in the longer formats of the game, he's had a decent outing in the T20 format as well. He has played 30 T20 matches till date, scored 646 runs, at an average of 27, and a strike rate of 123.
(vii) Mayank Dagar - This left arm spinner from Himachal Pradesh was part of the Kings XI Punjab squad in the 2018 squad, and played one game as a substitute fielder only. He is yet to make an official debut in the IPL. He has played 44 T20 games till date, and has picked up 44 wickets, at an economy rate of only 6. He has been playing in the domestic circuit since the 2016-17 Syed Mushtaq Ali Season, and has played a major role in Himachal's growth as a team over the last few years.
(viii) Nitish Kumar Reddy - A surprise pick if you see his T20 performances. He has only played 5 T20 games, and all of them in the 2021 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Season, and didn't feature in the 2022 season. In the 5 games, he's only scored 92 runs, at an average of 23, and a strike rate of only 96. He is a local player, having played for Andhra Pradesh in the domestic set-up, and that's why the Sunrisers scouts have added him into their squad.
(ix) Akeal Hosein - He's been playing in his domestic side of Trinidad and Tobago since 2013, but has suddenly rose to fame and recognition in recent times. He moved to the Trinbago Knight Riders in 2020, and it has been a change of fortune for him. He played in the BBL 2022-23 season as well as the PSL 2023 season, and is now bought into the IPL 2023 season as well. He has been bought at the base price but he is a value pick for sure and can be a game changer with the ball whenever he gets to play.
(x) Anmolpreet Singh - This technically sound batsman from Punjab made his IPL debut in 2019 for the Mumbai Indians, but it's been 4 years since then, and he's played only 3 games in the IPL. He was dropped due to poor performances, having been able to score only 29 runs, at an average of less than 10, and a strike rate of just above 100. In the domesti circuit however, he's more suited for the longer formats of the game, averaging 54 in the First Class format, and 40 in the List A format. But, he only averages 19 in the T20 format, after playing 26 games.
(xi) Heinrich Klaassen - An explosive wicket keeper batsman from South Africa. He is an experienced middle order batsman having played for a lot of teams across the globe. He has even played in the IPL for the Rajasthan Royals, and never had a good outing in the IPL. He has played 7 IPL matches within 2018 and 2019 seasons, but has only managed to score 66 runs, at an average of 13.20
and a strike rate of just 116. It's been 4 years since his IPL stint, and he has grown in form and experience as well since then. He would like to have a good season with the bat this time around, with a different franchise for him, and a captain who's his own International teammate.
(xii) Adil Rashid - A highly experienced player for England. He has been playing Domestic cricket since 2006, and International Cricket since 2009. He adds a lot of experience to the inexperienced Sunrisers unit. But, when it comes to the IPL, he has only played 1 game, for the Punjab Kings, in the 2021 IPL season. However, in the T20 format itself, he has played 251 matches, having picked up 244 wickets, at an economy rate of 7.53, and a strike rate of 19. He has been in a really good recent form with consistent wickets as well. He surely adds value to the bowling unit of this side, but it's yet to be seen if he gets a game to play this season.
(xiii) Mayank Markande - Made his debut in 2018 with the Mumbai Indians and had a breakthrough season due to which he even got capped for India in Feb 2019 itself, though only got one game to play. He picked up 15 wickets in the 14 games in his initial season in 2018, but has only managed to pick 3 more wickets in the last 4 years, though has played only 6 games as well. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy seasons as well, he's only played 22 games, and picked up 25 wickets, at a strike rate of 19.
