5) STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES
A) STRENGTHS
(i) A quality and a well balanced unit - This is the same XI which ended up 2nd on the points table last season. The only absence is that of Prasidh who has been ruled out, and they've taken an experienced campaigner in Holder into the squad from the auction, who is an ideal death bowler for them. They could always promote Holder or Ashwin with the bat too. Jaiswal has been in a great form, and so has Buttler. Buttler was the orange cap winner in the previous season, and Chahal was the purple cap winner. They have a well balanced side with a good Left-Right combination in their batting order till No.7 as well. Addition of Root and Zampa just add more value to the squad.
(ii) The spin twins/trio - They have a fixed Ash-Yuzi spin duo in their XI, who both bowl different types of variations. Ash bowls away from a left handed batsman with his off break deliveries, while Yuzi would bowl away from the right handed batsmen with his leg break ones. At the same time, on spin friendly wickets, they could make that duo as an ideal trio with Zampa joining the XI and adding more experience and value in an already quality side.
B) WEAKNESSES
(iii) Lack of batting all rounders - They only have one genuine batting all rounder in their squad, and that is Riyan Parag. Even then, he doesn't bowl too often in the IPL, unlike in the domestic circuit. Root hasn't bowled in T20s since a long time, nor has Jaiswal been given the ball in IPL. A lack of a genuine Batting all rounder means lack of a 6th bowling option in the side, so if any bowler tends to go expensive, they might still have to rely on them for their entire spell of 4 overs. If they do bring in another bowler into the side, they would have to remove a batsman from the side and increase their tail, when they already have 3 players who cannot contribute much with the bat. Donovan Ferreira is the only batting all rounder in the squad who could have been a good 6th bowling option as well as a decent finisher, but being an overseas player, it would be unlikely him to feature this season.
6) NEW ADDITIONS TO THE SQUAD FROM IPL 2022
(i) Jason Holder - A veteran in this format of the game. He has played close to 300 T20 games till date, across the globe. He has been playing in this format for the last 10 years now. He has been the captain for the Barbados Royals in the CPL, and now has been bought in the auction by the same management of the Royals in the IPL. His experience comes in handy with both bat and ball, and has always delivered with wickets when the team needs the most. It was a surprise why the Lucknow Super Giants released him, but a worthy pick for the Royals. In the last 3 seasons itself, he's played 27 games and has picked up 44 wickets, at a strike rate of just 14, and has always delivered at the death. Him coming to this side adds more value to their unit nonetheless.
(ii) Donovan Ferreira - A surprising pick by the scouts going for an unknown name from the overseas list. He is from South Africa, and made his T20 debut in 2018 for his domestic side in South Africa, but started playing at a franchise level only a couple months back, in the SA20 League 2023. He has played 37 T20 games all across domestic formats, and has scored 703 runs, at an average of 32, and a strike rate of 149. He has also picked up 10 wickets, at an economy of 7, and a strike rate of 19. Though, in the SA20 league, he managed to scored only 164 runs, in 11 games, at an average of only 18, and a strike rate of 136, but picked up 10 wickets, at an economy rate of only 6. A good young all rounder, just needs some game time at this level.
(iii) Kunal Rathore - This stylish left handed batsman from Rajasthan has although only played 3 games in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in the last two years and has scored 55 runs only, but has scored a hefty strike rate of 172 and could be a good impact player in time to come for the side. A local boy trying to make a mark for himself, he has been batting well in the nets too and has some good shots in the book.
(iv) Adam Zampa - He made his IPL debut way back in 2016 where he only played 5 games, but picked up 12 wickets there. However, in the last 5 years, he's only played 3 games in the IPL, and managed to get 2 wickets, and that too in 2020. He hasn't played a single IPL game in the last 2 years, and yet again, he might have to wait a while before featuring the XI. Ofcourse, he's an experienced campaigner for the Aussies as well as in the Big Bash League. He has played 72 T20Is for the Aussies and has picked up 82 wickets, at a strike rate of below 19, and an economy rate of below 7.
(v) KM Asif - He had been part of the Chennai Super Kings for the last 4 seasons, and has been playing for Kerala since 2018 as well. He has surely earned enough experience playing under MSD. He has picked up 33 wickets in the 27 games he's played in the T20 format, at a good strike rate of 16, and a decent economy rate of 7.8. He has played only 4 games in the IPL till date, and only 1 game since 2019. He has picked up 4 wickets, at a strike rate of 12.25. He has proved to be a wicket taking bowler and would look for a chance this season in the absence of Prasidh.
(vi) Murugan Ashwin - He is an experienced player when it comes to the IPL. He made his debut in 2016 with the Rising Pune Supergiants. He has played for 5 franchises already in the last 7 seasons, and is coming from Mumbai Indians to the Royals for this season. He has played 42 games in the IPL till date, and has picked up 35 wickets, at an economy rate of less than 8, and a strike rate of just above 24. He had a good last season with the Mumbai Indians having picked up 9 wickets in 8 games that he played. He can be a good backup to Chahal in the squad.
(vii) Akash Vashisht - The player from Himachal Pradesh scored 216 runs, at an average of 54, in the 5 innings that he played in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022. He has been in the domestic circuit since 2014, though he made his T20 debut in 2019. He has played 17 games in the T20 format, has scored 322 runs, at an average of 32, and a strike rate of 146, and has also picked up 7 wickets, at an economy rate of below 7.
(viii) Joe Root - One of the best test batsmen in the world undoubtedly. He has scored almost 11000 test runs and has played 129 matches. But, when we come to the T20I format, he's only played 32 games, and left the T20I format in 2019 itself. He isn't known for his T20 performances, but has been a great opener for Yorkshire in the T20 Blast over the years. He has played 35 T20 games for Yorkshire and has scored 903 runs, at an average of 39, and a strike rate of 135. He could be a good top order batsman even for the Royals, especially alongside his countryman Buttler at the top as well.
(ix) Abdul Bazith P.A. - The finisher from Kerala caught the eyes of the scouts after he scored an unbeaten 27(15), when the team against Haryana was at 90/6, and led the team to victory chasing a total of 132, in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022. In the 8 T20s he's played so far, he's scored at a strike rate of 150.
7) STATS FROM OVER THE YEARS (as part of any team before this)
(i) Top Run Scorers
-> Sanju Samson - Runs (3526), Avg (29.14) - 138M/134I
-> Jos Buttler - Runs (2831), Avg (39.87) - 82M/81I
-> Devdutt Padikkal - Runs (1260), Avg (28) - 46M/46I
(ii) Top Wicket Takers

-> Jason Holder - Wickets (49), Avg (24.02), SR (16.82) - 38M/38I
8) UNKNOWN PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR IF THEY PLAY
(i) Kuldip Yadav - He played one game for the Royals in the 2021 season, against the Mumbai Indians, where he bowled a decent spell of 2 overs, and went for 16 runs. He has only played 3 First Class matches for Delhi since that game, and has picked up only 5 wickets in 4 innings of the same. He has been retained by the franchise so they do see the potential in this speedster.
(ii) Dhruv Jurel - A 22 year old young wicket keeper batsman from Uttar Pradesh was in the India-A U19 Squad in the 2019-20 season, where he scored 516 runs, at an average of 47, in the 15 One-Day innings he got to play. However, in the T20 format, he is yet to make a mark with the bat, as he's only managed to score 28 runs in the 3 games he's played in, at a strike rate of only 72. He is a more technically sound batsman and better suited for the longer formats of the game.
(iii) Kuldeep Sen - He played 7 games for the Royals in the previous season, wherein he picked up 8 wickets, with a best bowling figure of 4/20, but bowled at an economy rate of 9.41, due to which he didn't play the remaining games. He proved to be a wicket taking bowler, but ab expensive one at that. He is known to bowl consistently at speeds of above 145kmph. He could be a huge asset to the side in the absence of Prasidh this season.
