The game of cricket has been evolving at a brisk pace and the cricket administrations all across the globe are leaving no stone unturned to match up the sport with the modern day demands. Time and again there has been numerous changes in the cricket rule books and one such rule was Super Sub.
Started in the early 2005s, a Super Sub was generally a player who could be subbed in the game if the situation demanded so. The player who gets subbed by the super sub will have no more role to play in the game. The rule looked interesting but it didn't work out too well as the captains had to announce the super sub before the toss and this single factor got it abolished.
Now after 17 years, the same "Super Sub" is all set to get reintroduced but with some modifications and changes.
In the ongoing Legends League of Cricket, former head coach of Team India and current commisioner of the LLC Ravi Shastri has introduced the new rule where the teams are allowed to substitute a player in the playing XI after completion of 10 overs of the first innings.
The player who gets subbed in from a pool of 2-3 players thus eradicating the flaws of the last time. Such rules are not new, even BBL has introduced such a similar rule ahead of the 2020-21 edition known as the X-factor player.
BCCI president Sourav Ganguly too has backed the Super Sub rule and has rephrased it as the Impact Player.
As per BCCI’s new rule, each playing team can have one Impact Player per match.
Before the toss, the teams need to identify playing XI and 4 substitutes. Out of the 4 substitutes named in the team sheet, only one of the players can be used as an Impact player.
BCCI also further stated that an Impact Player can be introduced before the completion of the 14th of either innings. The Impact Player can come in only at the end of the over or at the fall of a wicket or at the end of the innings or when a player is injured. The Impact Player is allowed to bat as well as bowl but the number of batsmen allowed to bat will be restricted to 11.
However it must be noted that the player who is replaced by an Impact Player can no longer take part in the remainder of the match and is also not permitted to return as a substitute fielder.
This rule is all set to be introduced in the upcoming edition of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and if found successful can be even implemented in the Indian Premier League.
