Gone for a Duck”- a phrase that is hated by most batsmen. However, not many can actually avoid the fact of getting out for a zero even once in his career. Since its inception in 2008, the Indian Premier League has taken the cricketing world by storm. The brand of cricket exhibited in the IPL is second to none. However, unlike the different batting records today we will be discussing about the players with the maximum number of ducks in IPL History.

Remember, the competition is intense in this list too with as many as 7 players tied with the maximum number of ducks in his IPL, ie 13. So stay tuned.

1. Piyush Chawla: Former Indian leg spinner Piyush Chawla holds the record of scoring the maximum number of ducks in IPL history. Chawla, who is currently the 4th highest wicket taker in IPL, played in 165 IPL matches, batted in 82 innings and has 13 ducks to his name.

2. Harbhajan Singh: Harbhajan Singh is no bunny with the bat, had a strike rate of 137.91 and has even scored 1 IPL fifty in his 15 years IPL career. But that hasn't stopped him from getting 13 ducks in his career. Harbhajan who retired from all formats of the game in 2021 has achieved this not so remarkable feat in 90 innings he batted.

3. Mandeep Singh: The energetic and dynamic Mandeep Singh is the third name in our list. Mandeep Singh is playing IPL since 2010 and has played over 100 matches (107*) in IPL. Mandeep too has scored 13 ducks in 94 innings in IPL. Being an active player, we may end up seeing Mandeep Singh climbing the top of the pile anytime soon.

4. Parthiv Patel: The Grand Old Man of Indian cricket, Parthiv Patel has played for 6 IPL Franchises in his 13 year IPL career and has scored 13 half-centuries in his name. Coincidentally, he has also scored 13 Ducks in his career. But compared to his fellow mates, Parthiv has achieved this feat in 137 innings.

5. Ajinkya Rahane: Ajinkya Rahane who has 2 IPL Centuries also finds himself in the list of maximum ducks in IPL. Rahane too has scored 13 ducks in his illustrious IPL career.Rahane however took 145 innings to achieve this milestone. Rahane is one of the fewest players to actively feature in the IPL since its inception in 2008 and can very well own this unwanted list as he has a still few years of cricket left in him.

2 Honorary Mentions:

*Ambati Rayudu: 13 Ducks in 167 Innings.

*Rohit Sharma: 13 Ducks in 211 Innings.

Now time for some facts and trivia:

*Balachandra Akhil (RCB) scored the first duck in IPL. He scored a 2 ball 0 against Kolkata Knight Riders in the first match of IPL back in 2008.

*Unmukt Chand, India’s U19 World Cup winning captain made his IPL Debut in 2013 for the Delhi Daredevils. He got out for a Platinum duck in the first ball of his IPL Career, at the first ball of an IPL innings. Coincidentally that was the first ball bowled in IPL 2013.

*Raj Angad Bawa, India’s U-19 World Cup star too got out for a Golden Duck in his debut match. He became the latest entrant in IPL history to be dismissed in the first ball of his IPL Career.

*The maximum number of ducks scored in an IPL season is 4. And the list features 5 entrants:

Herschelle Gibbs (DC): 2009.

Mithun Manhas (PWI: 2011.

Manish Pandey (PWI): 2012.

Shikhar Dhawan (DC): 2020.

Nicholas Pooran (PBKS): 2021.

*Nicholas Pooran has a forgettable consistent record in IPL Ducks. He scored a 0 Ball, 1 Ball, 2 Balls and 3 Balls IPL Ducks in 2021 IPL Season. Notably he scored a Diamond, Golden as well as a Silver Duck in a single IPL Season.

*Gautam Gambhir who led Kolkata Knight Riders to 2 IPL Titles has a dubious IPL record in his name. He became the first player in IPL History to score 3 consecutive ducks in IPL. KKR however went on to win the IPL that year. A “Ducky Charm” indeed.

*Rajasthan Royal’s Ashton Turner shares Gambhir’s record of a triad of consecutive ducks in IPL 2019 and became the first overseas player in IPL history to achieve this feat. However, he went a step further as he had 2 consecutive ducks in T20 cricket before thus taking his total tally to 5 Ducks.
