The IPL 2022 Mega Auctions got over on 13th February with 204 players going under the hammer. There were some hits while there were some misses in the IPL Auction process. While some players got significantly high bids there were a few players who ended up being unsold. Today, we will be talking about 5 International Players who went unsold in IPL Auctions.
Aaron Finch: Australia's white ball captain who also won the T20 World Cup a couple of months earlier is the first name in our list. Finch has been a prolific T20 player and is currently ranked 6th in ICC T20 Rankings. However, a lacklustre IPL Career robbed him of an IPL contract. Finch entered the auctions with a base price of Rs 1.5 crore and found no takers. Finch, aged 35, has played 87 matches in the IPL and has represented 8 different franchises. His last IPL appearance came in IPL 2020 when he turned up for RCB.
Eoin Morgan: If it was the T20 World Cup winning captain first, it is ODI World Cup winning captain next. Eoin Morgan has been a prolific white ball player and has established himself in the global T20 franchises across the world. However his returns diminished when it comes to playing in the IPL. Morgan led KKR to the Finals in IPL 2021 but ended up having 9 single digit scores in 10 innings. It has been his recent form that led to him going unsold in the IPL 2022 Mega Auctions.
Shakib Al Hasan: Bangladesh's star all-rounder Shakib al Hasan is a surprise entrant in the list of unsold players. Shakib has been in prolific form in the ongoing Bangaldesh Premier League with the bat and ball but found himself with no takers in the IPL Mega Auctions. With a base price of Rs 2 crores, Shakib was brought in to the auction table twice. His availability for the entire length of the tournament was in question which might have stopped teams from spending big on him.
Steve Smith: Steve Smith is the next name in our list who could not find any takers in the IPL Mega Auctions. Smith has been a more than handy T20 batsman and his ability to play spin makes him a valuable proposition in the IPL. Smith's form and capability was never a question but his availability remains as one. Australia is scheduled to travel to Pakistan during the IPL for Test matches and Smith is one of the first names that is a certainty in that side. Smith last played for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2021 and played 8 matches.
Dawid Malan: The former World number 1 T20 batsman (currently ranked 5th), Dawid Malan, is a surprise entrant in the list of unsold players in the IPL. Malan's reputation as a T20 batter is beyond question but his form in the Indian questions remains one. Malan played only 1 match in IPL 2021 for the Punjab Kings and looked uncomfortable in the knock of 26. With a base price of Rs 1.5 crores the teams wished not to bid for Dawid Malan as there were other all-rounder options that excited them.
Suresh Raina: Suresh Raina is the name that surprised the most with his omission from the IPL 2022 Auctions. Raina popularly known as Mr. IPL owing to his consistency and performance, found no takers after being released by Chennai Super Kings ahead of the IPL Auctions. Raina with a base price of Rs 2 crores saw no interest from the franchises during the bidding time. Raina's retirement from International Cricket and his decision of not playing domestic cricket has been seen as one of the reasons for him going unsold. Raina is currently the 4th highest run getter in IPL with 5528 runs.
