Today we will be focussing on the batsmen who scored the maximum runs in Ashes.
Ever since its inception in 1877, the Ashes had been the centre stage of many great batsmen. The record of the highest number of runs scored by a batsman in a single edition of Ashes belong to none other than Sir Donald Bradman.
Don Bradman scored 974 runs in a single edition of the Ashes way back in 1930. Don took 5 matches (7 Innings) to achieve this feat at a stupendous average of 139.14. He hit 4 100s in that series including his highest test score of 334. Till date, no other batsman has been able to breach this record.
He is followed by English cricketer Wally Hammond. Hammond scored 905 runs in 9 innings in Ashes 1928/29 with a healthy average of 113.12. Hammond hit 4 centuries in that series including a highest score of 251.
The only active batsman in the list of maximum runs scored in a single edition of the Ashes is Steve Smith. Smith scored 687 runs in 7 innings in Ashes 2017/18 with an average of 137.40. Smith scored 3 hundreds with a highest score of 239 in that series.
Now coming back to the historical aspect, Don Bradman tops the list of maximum runs scored in Ashes history. Bradman had scored a mammoth 5028 runs in the 37 innings he has played in the Ashes. Bradman also has 19 centuries in the Ashes with an average of 89.78.
The batsman second in the list is English great Jack Hobbs. Hobbs has scored over 61000 runs in FC cricket. His Ashes numbers too are very impressive. He has scored 3636 runs in 41 Tests with an average of 54.26. He has also scored 12 centuries in the process.
In the list dominated by the all time greats like Allan Border, Steve Waugh and David Gower, the only active player in the list is Steve Smith. Smith has scored 2927* runs in the Ashes in 30 games at an average of 62.27. He also has 11 100s with a highest score of 239 in the Ashes.
