All you need to know about IPL 2022 Retentions.

The IPL 2022 auctions is set to go underway on January next year.

As many as 27 players were retained by the 8 franchises with the likes of Defending Champions- Chennai Super Kings and Runners-up Kolkata Knight Riders opting for 4 retentions each. Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians too have exercised 4 retentions. Punjab Kings have 2 retentions while the remaining 3 franchises have gone in with 3 retentions.

Punjab Kings enter the auction with the highest purse of 72 crores, whereas Delhi Capitals have the lowest kitty with 47.5 crores.

The two new franchises: Ahmedabad and Lucknow will have the option to draft in a maximum of three players (2 Indians and 1 overseas) ahead of the IPL 2022 auction.

The new franchises can spend Rs 33 crore each on signing three players before the auction. The break-up is Rs 15 crore, Rs 11 crore and Rs 7 crore for the first, second and third player respectively within the deadline of December 1 to 25.

With an exciting month ahead let us have a look of how the 8 teams stack up with the retentions.

Chennai Super Kings: The defending champions have gone in with 4 retentions namely Ravindra Jadeja, Ms Dhoni, Moeen Ali and Rituraj Gaikwad. Jadeja has bagged the highest salary cap of Rs 16 crores followed by Dhoni who will get 12 crores.

Kolkata Knight Riders: The Knights have decided to part ways with skipper Morgan and have retained Andre Russell, Venkatesh Iyer, Varun Chakravarty and Sunil Narine. Russell will bag the highest salary cap of Rs 12 crores. The exclusion of in-form Shubman Gill has raised quite a few eyebrows.

Delhi Capitals: The Delhi Capitals have retained skipper Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw, Axar Patel and Anrich Nortje as the fab 4 while letting go of Shreyas Iyer their former skipper along with the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Shikhar Dhawan and Ravichandran Ashwin. Pant will earn the highest salary of Rs 16 crores.

Royal Challengers Bangalore: The Royal Challengers Bangalore will be under a brand new captain as Virat Kohli stepped down from captaincy post the 2021 season. The retirement of Ab de Villiers from cricket has forced RCB to go in with 3 retentions in the form of Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and Mohammad Siraj. Kohli will take a salary cut and will earn Rs 15 crores.

Mumbai Indians: The 5 time IPL champions have retained Skipper Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah among the Indian contingent. West Indies captain Kieron Pollard too find his name among the list of players retained.

Punjab Kings: The Punjab Kings has let go off their skipper and star batsman KL Rahul and enters the auction with the highest kitty of Rs 72 crores. They have retained Mayank Agarwal and youngster Arshdeep Singh for Rs 12 crores and 4 crores respectively.

Rajasthan Royals: The Royals have exercised 3 retentions and those 3 retentions happen to be their top 3. The Royals go in with Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler, and Yashasvi Jaiswal with Samson earning Rs 14 crores.

Sunrisers Hyderabad: The 8th placed team in the IPL 2021 has been jolted the most by the retentions. David Warner has not been retained. The likes of Rashid Khan, Jason Holder and Bhubaneswar Kumar too are missing from the list due to salary structure. The Sunrisers go in with Kane Williamson and uncapped Abdul Samad and Umran Malik as their 3 retentions with Kane going for Rs 14 crores.

With the vast pool of players available in Auction pool it would be interesting to see how the teams fine tune their signings ahead of the IPL.
